Welcome To Mugi!

Here at Mugi we strive to recreate the authentic dining experience you would have in a traditional japanese restaurant. Michio and Etsuko are our two kitchen chefs with a combined fifty-five years of professional cooking experience in the Portland area. (not including experience in Japan) These two prepare fresh japanese dishes from scratch, using no preservatives/MSG or any other ingredient which doesn't pass their most exacting standards.

Etsuko's son Jason is the sushi chef at our award winning restaurant. With his bi-cultural background, Jason has been able to bridge the gap between the strict and traditional teachings of his japanese teachers with the flair of the american. Although using the exact techniques which all japanese sushi chefs are trained to use, he has also been able to incorporate the many things which make sushi in America so different from in Japan. So don't worry! You can still get a california roll at Mugi!

Remember that in Japan, the eye and the palatte must be equally pleased. So with that in mind, we strive to make the dishes we prepare noteworthy for their asthetic appearance and subtle japanese flavors.
Because of these standards in our food preparation and cleanliness we were awarded the title of one of the top twenty restaurants in the Portland area by Karen Brooks of the Oregonian newspaper!
So remember. If you want the food which many japanese customers have said is the best they've had since leaving Japan, then come to Mugi and experience it first hand.
